Scratching My Head!

In a brief blurb on CNN today, I heard that the UN's new council on Human Rights was voted in. However, if reform is what the UN was looking for, then why is there a majority of countries with major human rights violations on the council? I have tried surfing around to find more info, but all I could find were vague explainations on this vital change. I am still scratching my head! Kofi-Anin seems to be less in control of the reforms he is trying to impose! What will still stop these countries from protecting one another as they have traditionally done in the past?
Even Amnesty International doesn't have much to say except, at this posting, they are hopeful about the May 9th elections. I was kind of hoping for a bit more outrage! I f you click on the Amnesty International logo, it will take you to the UN site (sorry 'bout that!) and the Council of Foreign Affairs logo will take you to their site. The UN link lists the new countries voted in and how many seats they have obtained.

lately i question the oversight authority of the U.N. in general... the untied states of america is getting away completely unscathed with buko violations of U.N. policy... we used to be the watchdog for the U.N.... now we need watching! the world is going to hell in a handbasket

this was jimmy carter's point when he last spoke at the UN. he is clearly uncomfortable with the united states' policies in general, but to call for the US to be ousted on the council is quite telling. hey~ to quote kathleen madigan..."when jimmy carter calls you an asshole, you're an asshole!"

i guess i am upset that there is no longer any outrage what-so-ever!

Once again you seem anxious to make the US the bad guy...the UN has not been doing its job for a very long time. The US showed the UN its outrage when it became necessary to oust Hussein...if the UN had done its job, we would not be at war. UN workers in impoverished countries are soliciting children as young as 8 to have sex in exchange for food. And these are the people we are supposed to trust with our security? Open your eyes and see where evil really exists.

your point is well taken, however...my original posting is that kofi-anin and the UN are becoming so impotent that there are no longer any safeguards for human rights in this world. they (and the US, btw) stood by while china has murdered and tortured thousands of tibetans.(this is just one example of what slips by ) so, to say that i am only targeting the US as a bad guy would be wrong. i have always been on the fence about our UN involvement.

to further my point...i am outraged the amnesty international has no posting on their site about who is now on the council-or even that by not saying anything, the approve(?)!

obviously I was responding to the replies...not the original post. I totally agree, the UN has repeatedly ignored human rights violations. Rawanda, Dafur, Bosnia...Icould go on...oh yeah...Iraq...but what works...aggression, sadly. Nato used it in Bosnia without UN sanction...what doesn't work...just sitting back and saying how bad it is,like Rawanda

i agree. and hey...i still love jimmy carter! i gots a weak spot for him. he does so much more than just talk. he tries to help-he may not always be either right or helpful, but he follows his heart. i just love the guy!:o)
