Is good news or bad?
Went with my uncle for his radiation intro today. While looking thru his MRIs, both the doc and I saw something a little strange...a mass, 23.6 mm big, on the anterior superior portion of his bladder. The cancer, which was originally on the base of the bladder is definitely non-exsistent. The Hopkin's doc did an internal scope and found no abnormal cells.
Normal bladder cells are transistional epithelial--which means their shaped to expand and contract. Here is what they look like:
(Notice the irregular shaping of the cancer cells. The smoothness of the plasma membrane is not consistent.)
The radiological oncologist has ordered a PET scan for Monday. I will be at the follow-up visit next Thursday. For now, we wait.

What is Positron Emission Tomography?
Positron emission tomography, also called PET imaging or a PET scan, is a diagnostic examination that involves the acquisition of physiologic images based on the detection of radiation from the emission of positrons. Positrons are tiny particles emitted from a radioactive substance administered to the patient. The subsequent images of the human body developed with this technique are used to evaluate a variety of diseases.

and so they were...all engineering and pre-med kids!
